Villa Flora, Menton - France

I read your article on Negro Sculpture last night. It was excellent. I thought Fry most feeble in the Athenaeum.  As usual he was afraid to say what he felt. He wanted - a small fry - to be in the cultured swim. Will you take me to see some pictures when I come home?
Im lunching with the Schiffs tomorrow. It will be our last meeting until they come back to London. Schiff - well, you'll see what he's like. I was at a big lunch the other day (about 10 people) at their house & you should have heard the talk against The Nation - and FOR the A. [Athenaeum] Massingham, according to some really rather intelligent men there, gets his facts hopelessly wrong about French affairs, but I learnt a great deal of interesting facts about the French - not to their credit. Ill tell you in about 3 years time when the other things have been told. Darling dont make my homecoming an effort - don't curse the upset of it all. I will try not to show how glad I am & so frighten my darling little mate. Dont feel you have to meet me even. It is very dreadful to know that even Love is an effort to you at times & I don't want you to make that effort. Feel - oh well, she'll make things easy and L.M. will be on the spot and I shant have to think of puddings. Years ago I wanted to change things in you - I wanted you less ‘vague', less silent, more - almost - practical. But you must always remember that was years ago. Now I don't want you to be anybody but your natural self - free to wander away or to keep quiet just as it pleases you.  [To J. M. Murry in Collected Letters]
