Villa Flora, Menton - France

All being well I shall be at the Palais Lyon on Wednesday until Thursday. Do you think L'Hote would come and see me on Wednesday afternoon - or Valery. If they'd leave a ‘bleu' letting me know when to expect them Id be delighted. I want to see them for the firm - to have a chat, don't you know & hear what is happening. Its the most divine day. Im staying in bed until lunch as I had a heavy day yesterday buying small presents to bring back and so on. Exhausting work because one gets so frightfully excited as well. [. . .]
You are having a worrying time about Arthur, dear love. Couldn't the discussion be left till I talk it over with you. But after all there is nothing to talk over with me that you havent mentioned. If Arthur is going to be a real artist he must have his chance & if I have the good fortune to make money you know Ill always help. As matters stand I spend every penny I have because you see I can't live except in a rather luxurious way & I can only get better by resting - taking carriages - living as though I had £800 a year of my own instead of £400. This journey home for L.M. & me, for instance has cost - I really cant say what - telegraphing to Paris, to the boat, to the other side - with wagon lits and so on - but I can't do it except like that. lve written Rutter 3 times for the money for my story & Ive not had a penny, nor have I had a cheque from the paper this month. But all the same we shall be alright I know & we shall take Arthur & when he is here with me he'll not cost you a sou.  [To J. M. Murry in Collected Letters, 20 April 1920]
