Villa Flora, Menton - France

You see I am practically determined to take either a flat or small villa for next year. I want to - pay for it while the exchange is high. Not pay all - that I couldn't do but pay part of my Constable money immediately. This is very important to me, old boy. As it works out I think the advantages are greater in being my own mistress. Of course you can't advise me, Mr Absurdity. You're my literary adviser thats all. I want it to be in Menton if possible because I simply love this little place - LOVE IT. If it weren't for you England wouldn't see me again for a very long day. Id live at La Turbie in the summer & here in the Winter. But YOU are in London and so my whole heart is there until we are free enough to live between Broomies & the S. of France. Even then I don't want to live far from Menton - because I can't live all the year round away from music & opera especially. One can get both here and at Monte. You need never go. But Ill often take a slave and descend to either town to hear a symphony. But above all I long for the time when we shall be together ‘all the year round'. Its not yet but it will come & now we know how to receive it. Life - strange Life - teaches - or no - one learns. I wouldn't be without these months for anything in the world. Do you feel that? Without them we were going all wrong - getting into an entirely false position. This separation has been and will be for ever the great fact of my life - my secret when you know "something happened". [To J. M. Murry in Collected Letters, 9 April 1920]

My dear Mrs Schiff
I should love to come on Thursday if I may. The weather looks so unpromising in the morning but Ill come unless the wind is fierce on Thursday - with great pleasure. No I havent changed my tickets. Silly events of no importance - but disagreeable events make me want to leave the Villa Flora as soon as I can.
With love from
K.M.
Is your cold better? Im sorry to hear of it. [To Violet Schiff in Collected Letters, c.11 April 1920]
